Uganda looks back on an eventful history.
Due to its geographical location on the so-called Great African Rift Valley, Uganda is part of the area anthropologists call the “Cradle of Humankind.” With the onset of modern times, various kingdoms emerged. In 1896 Uganda was placed under British protectorate. . After independence in 1962, the country was ruled by various presidents and dictators until a process of democratization finally began in the mid-1980s.
